For people who don’t understand how much of a problem racism is in Australia here are some comments that people made in regards to the photo (the photo shows graffiti saying ‘Jan 26 (which is Australia Day) Australia Shame’) above:
"I wish these ‘activists’ would just get the fuck over it.. we’re just celebrating our awesome country, NOTHING MORE..cant we just have one day to do so?? there’s 364 other days to protest their views..just saying..”
"Catch, bash, then shoot"
“Total crap. This effort for reconciliation has created the view that Australia was founded on racist values and the new generations have no idea of the truth. The truth is when settled, Australia was segregated. After just 100 years they tried to integrate, and have been making an effort since. Unfortunately, the aboriginal community (or most of) refuse to acknowledge what is being done. This is being perpetuated by the minority, thus it cannot be classed as racist… I wish it was the other way around so I could see the hoo-haa.”
in 1788 AD, when the British came to Australia, after 50,000 years of life, the damn Abos still hadn’t invented the fucking wheel, and yet they want us to respect their culture and way of life”
"When white man came to this land, they had swords and armor, and the native people had sticks and rocks. They lost.”
"Should’ve wiped them out to being with"
"If it is such a ‘shame’ then why are they still here?"
"I’ve studied them and ecology. They’re genetically inferior and should’ve been wiped out like the Aztecs etc.”
Okay, so for people who don’t know, Australia was settled on January 26, 1788 by Captain Cook and like most countries that were settled at the time they assumed they were the superior race and literally killed millions upon millions of Indigenous Australians. This racism has never stopped and is defended by people every time (‘reverse racism’ is often used to explain this feeling) they feel a little bit offended by Indigenous people defending their culture or the racism they are subjected to etc.
And in response to a few of the things that might not make sense to non-Australians:
·         “we’re just celebrating our awesome country, NOTHING MORE” – no, we are literally celebrating the day that white people invaded their land and then claimed it as their own, all the while killing people and destroying their culture
·         “This effort for reconciliation has created the view that Australia was founded on racist values and the new generations have no idea of the truth” – actually. Australia was ‘discovered’ by Indigenous Australians long before many other cultures in the world had even begun existing, though the Australia that you are defending was literally founded on racist views
·         “been making an effort since” – wrong, wrong and wrong: there has been little to no effort regarding the rights of Indigenous people in Australia and the ‘efforts’ that have been made? Were all made since 2000 which isn’t really a good track record (oh, unless you count the government allowing them to finally vote in 1967)
·         “This is being perpetuated by the minority, thus it cannot be classed as racist” – this is literally one of the stupidest things I have ever read in my life
·         “I wish it was the other way around so I could see the hoo-haa” – are you kidding me right now? You wish that all of your culture and land was stolen by people who thought they were more superior? That you had no idea who your family are because as a child ‘your’ government stole you from your home? That wherever you walked, as the traditional custodians of this land you were barely acknowledged? That when you went to school your culture was ignored and that it wasn’t even taught about? That you would be stereotyped only as a drunk native who knew nothing? That you were mocked and degraded by everyone in sight? And then you have to balls to classify all of that racist bullshit as ‘hoo-haa’
·         “after 50,000 years of life, the damn Abos still hadn’t invented the fucking wheel” – firstly I’m actually really uncomfortable quoting this guy as that is one of the most racist terms you can use and it is honestly disgusting (which probably helps get the point across a little bit more). And besides, Indigenous people could have invented infinite gold and they still would have been invaded and they still would be subjected to racism in current society. Also the important part of this sentence is the fact that they understand that Indigenous people had been living on Australian land for 50, 000 years but thinks because they didn’t invent one goddamn thing the British were right to destroy alllllll of that culture and history. ‘Logic’
·         "If it is such a ‘shame’ then why are they still here?" –Gee I don’t know maybe because it’s their fucking land and home and the only fucking place where they can maintain a connection to their culture and history?
The really sad part about all of this is that these comments don’t even come close to truly explaining the racism that has and still is present in Australian culture (especially to Indigenous people but nowadays you see it even more towards anyone who literally isn’t white).
